The shop

A wine bar,
and a Trasteverino.

The wine bar on Via della Scala opened in the early 1950s. The fittings are still the original ones: this is not period decor, it simply stayed where it was.

Biagio took it over in the 1970s. He came from Abruzzo and ended up one of the fixed points of the quarter, from his command post behind the counter.

Gianni di Gregorio put the place on screen in his film Pranzo di Ferragosto. Sandra Petrignani wrote about it in her book In mezzo il fiume. In Trastevere your name and where you come from count for nothing: what counts is being considered trasteverino. It is a title you earn by staying, and Biagio stayed.
